Lessons for a Wise King

THE SHRIMAD Bhagavatam includes advice given by the Supreme Lord to the great King Prithu. It may have been delivered thousands of years ago, but its wisdom holds true to this day:
"The Supreme Being said, 'O King, one who's advanced in intelligence and eager to perform activities that benefit others, you're the best amongst human beings. Advanced human beings are never malicious. Advanced intelligence gives us the consciousness and awareness about how different the soul is from the material body. If a person knows that this body is composed of nescience, desires and activities resulting from illusion, then he does not become addicted to his body.
"'Although a person may be within the material plane, his full knowledge of the Supreme will protect him from the destructive effects of materialism, because his well-being rests in My transcendental loving service. When a devotee cleanses his heart from material contamination, his mind becomes broader and transparent—and he will see things fairly.
"'Anyone who knows that this material body is supervised by our soul is eligible for liberation from material bondage. Since a man's spirit-soul is different from his material components, devotees who are connected with Me in intense friendship and affection are never agitated by happiness or distress brought by material possession.
"'My dear King, always treat people equally—whether they're better than or inferior to you. Control your mind and senses fully. In this transcendental position, execute your duty to give protection to the citizens of your kingdom.
"'Protecting the people is a king's occupational duty. A king who merely collects taxes but does not give his people proper protection will have his pious activities taken away from him.
"'If you continue to protect your people, then, in return, your subjects will love and respect you!'"
